GBTU organization system

The Main Armored Directorate (Glavnoye Bronetankovoye Upravleniye, GBTU) organized Soviet and Russian armored vehicle development, procurement, and classification from 1940 through modern times. This index system categorized tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, and related systems using standardized object numbers and designations.

Historical background

Formation: Established 1940 consolidating various armor bureaus under unified command structure.

Responsibilities: Requirements definition, design oversight, acceptance trials, procurement coordination, tactical doctrine development.

Classification system: Object numbering scheme assigning developmental designations before official service names (e.g., Object 172 becoming T-72).

Design bureaus: Coordinated multiple design facilities including Uralvagonzavod, Morozov Bureau, Kirov Plant.

Classification structure

Main battle tanks

Heavy tanks (discontinued post-1960s): IS series, T-10 family representing final heavy tank development before doctrine shift to universal MBTs.

Medium/main battle tanks: T-54/55, T-62, T-64, T-72, T-80, T-90 families constituting primary Soviet/Russian armor strength.

Light tanks: PT-76 amphibious reconnaissance tank, experimental designs for airborne forces.

Infantry fighting vehicles

BMP series: BMP-1, BMP-2, BMP-3 tracked IFVs providing mechanized infantry mobility and fire support.

BMD series: BMD-1, BMD-2, BMD-3, BMD-4 airborne variants offering reduced weight for air-deployability.

Armored personnel carriers

Tracked APCs: MT-LB multi-purpose carrier, various specialized variants.

Wheeled APCs: BTR-60, BTR-70, BTR-80, BTR-90, BTR-T families providing wheeled infantry transport.

Specialized vehicles

Armored recovery: BREM series recovery vehicles based on tank chassis.

Bridgelayers: MTU series mobile bridge systems for river crossing.

Engineering: Combat engineering vehicles, mine clearers, obstacle crossing systems.

Fire support: Tank destroyers, assault guns, heavy infantry support vehicles.

Object numbering system

GBTU assigned "Object" (Ob'yekt) numbers to developmental programs before official adoption:

Sequential numbering: Generally chronological assignment as programs initiated.

Factory correlation: Different design bureaus received number blocks (e.g., Uralvagonzavod received 100-series and 400-series blocks).

Variant suffixes: Modifications indicated by letter suffixes or additional numbers (Object 172M, Object 188).

Project cancellation: Many Object numbers never reached production, representing experimental or cancelled programs.

Equipment index

Tank development (select examples)

  • Object 140: T-54 replacement program (cancelled)
  • Object 166: T-62 developmental designation
  • Object 172: T-72 initial designation
  • Object 219: T-80 developmental program
  • Object 188: T-90 modernization program
  • Object 640: Black Eagle experimental MBT

IFV/APC development

  • Object 765: BMP-1 developmental designation
  • Object 675: BMD-1 airborne IFV
  • Object 681: BMP-2 improved variant
  • Object 688: BMP-3 advanced IFV
  • Object 950: BTR-90 wheeled APC

Procurement process

Requirements generation: GBTU defining operational requirements based on tactical doctrine and threat assessment.

Design competition: Multiple bureaus submitting competing designs for evaluation.

Prototype trials: Extensive testing including mobility, firepower, protection trials.

State acceptance: Formal evaluation by military representatives and state acceptance trials.

Production authorization: Decision to proceed with series production and service introduction.

Ongoing development: Continuous improvement programs and variant development throughout service life.

Modern organization

Current structure: Reformed as part of Main Automotive and Armored Directorate maintaining vehicle requirements and acquisition oversight.

Digital systems: Integration of computerized fire control, situational awareness, and active protection systems into legacy platforms.

Modernization programs: Systematic upgrades extending service life of existing fleets rather than wholesale replacement.

Export variants: Development of downgraded export versions meeting international customer requirements.
